Skurfberg. Citrusdal Mountain. Arbeidsend. These names refer to what is arguably the most Burgundy like area in South Africa. An area where only a handful of winemakers have access to these precious grapes.
Basie Van Lill is the farmer and grower on the Arbeidsend farm and he has been awarded ‘Grower of the Year’ by Tim Atkin MW.
From a renowned wine critic, comes these powerful statements;
‘These are arguably the most terroir-specific wines in our country, making the Skurfberg our very own Burgundy. I believe that in this special place, the terroir has more influence on the wine than grape variety.’
Only a handful of Chenins are produced from this region. Winemakers privileged to gain access to these grapes include such winemaking legends as Chris Alheit and Eben Sadie.
This Chenin Blanc comes from a small 2 hectare single vineyard planted in 1982. It shows opulent aromas of citrus and tropical notes which are underlined with subtle hints of toast. Fermentation in a combination of new, second and third fill French oak barrels contribute to a creamy texture and a long lingering finish.
