Lowerland, Prieska

Lowerland is tucked into the Northern bank of the Orange River, between the Doringberg Mountains of Prieska and the rocky hills of Niekerkshoop. It was purchased in 1965 by Oupa Coenie Coetzee, fourth generation descendant of the first Coetzee’s in this line to farm on Koedoeskop, a mountainous grazing farm between Niekerkshoop and Griekwastad.

Bertie Coetzee is the new young blood in charge. Bertie and his team is steering Lowerland towards a regenerative, sustainable model for agriculture and are in the process of converting Lowerland to a certified organic farm.

The high altitude (1,000m above sea level), desert climate and cool evening breezes from the Orange River creates a unique terroir for healthy grapes with compact berries, deep, complex fruit and a fresh, natural acidity. This results in the production of high quality grapes for cellars and wine makers looking for unique flavours and healthy, organically grown grapes.

In 2015, Bertie Coetzee registered Prieska as a wine producing region to hail a new era for wines from the Northern Cape.

Bertie is currently collaborating with talented, innovative winemaking friends to bring exciting, quality wines of origin Prieska to your glass.

This is definitely something so unique and cool to the new wave South African wine scene.

The Lowerland Tolbos Tannat is a limited release produced by Lukas van Loggerenberg of Van Loggerenberg Wines and is an absolute gem of a wine.

The Herd Sire Reserve is made by Johnnie Calitz at Anura. The three cultivars were chosen to represent the best attributes of our Bonsmara studs’ herd sires: Cabernet Sauvignon - depth and muscularity; Petit Verdot - dark pigment and colour; Merlot - versatility and adaptability.

We will soon be receiving our allocation of the Tannat and Herd Sire Reserve (Bordeaux style vino) and as volumes are limited, we encourage you to register your interest.
